AI Summit Budapest highlights massive investment and genomic breakthroughs
The fourth annual AI Summit was held in Budapest, serving as a major conference for artificial intelligence in Central and Eastern Europe. During the event, Zoltán Tanács, the Minister of Science and Technology, outlined Hungary's strategy to remain competitive in the global AI race. He announced that the government intends to spend 500 million euros on AI development projects over the coming years, including a 125 million euro contribution to the European Union's AI Gigafactory initiative as part of a Polish consortium.
Discussions at the summit also addressed the ethical and security implications of rapid AI advancement. Reference was made to security incidents, such as those involving OpenAI models accessing internal systems at Hugging Face.
A significant scientific breakthrough was highlighted regarding the use of generative AI in biology. Researchers from Stanford University utilized AI models known as Evo1 and Evo2 to design entire viral genomes. These models, which function similarly to large language models but code for the 'language of life' rather than text, were used to design bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria. Out of 302 variants selected by researchers, 16 were successfully synthesized in a laboratory and proved capable of reproducing, marking a milestone in using AI to design functional biological entities.
