Tamil Nadu's ruling AIADMK party is experiencing a heightened internal rift after a floor‑test vote saw cross‑voting by some MLAs. Factions led by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and a rebel group headed by C. Ve. Shanmugam and S. P. Velumani are vying for control, with the rebel bloc claiming a larger number of supporting legislators.

Palaniswami has removed rebel leaders from party posts and dismissed MLA G. Hari, while the rebel faction is exploring legal options and demanding a general council meeting. Security was ramped up around the party headquarters in Chennai amid fears of clashes. Both sides have held separate meetings – Palaniswami convened supporters at his residence, and the Velumani faction has indicated willingness to discuss intra‑party issues if invited by the AIADMK general secretary.

The dispute also involves attempts to have the assembly speaker disqualify rebel MLAs for not following the party line in the floor test and to appoint a new legislature party leader, deputy, and whip.
