Italy prepares for 2026-2027 influenza vaccination campaign
Italy is preparing for the 2026-2027 influenza vaccination campaign, scheduled to begin in early October. The Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have authorized nine updated vaccines based on World Health Organization recommendations regarding circulating viral strains.
Vaccinations are recommended and offered free of charge to high-risk groups, including individuals aged 60 and over, pregnant women, children aged 6 months to 6 years, and people with chronic conditions. Available formulations include injectable options and a nasal spray specifically for children and adolescents aged 2 to 18.
Health officials, including Undersecretary of State Marcello Gemmato, highlighted the expanding role of local pharmacies in the national health system. Pharmacies are increasingly serving as essential hubs for territorial healthcare, providing diagnostic services such as electrocardiograms and spirometry, as well as administering vaccines and managing telemedicine services to improve patient access to the National Health Service.
