Italy influenza season and vaccination preparations
Overview
The Italian Ministry of Health announced that the 2026-2027 influenza vaccination campaign is scheduled to begin in early October to protect the population before the peak winter circulation of respiratory viruses.
Medical experts have expressed concern regarding a potential early onset of respiratory infections driven by sudden temperature drops. Infectious disease specialist Massimo Andreoni, an emeritus professor and member of the Superior Health Council, noted that while influenza traditionally circulates starting in late November or early December, recent years have seen activity as early as late October. He warned that sharp temperature fluctuations, sometimes dropping by 10 to 15 degrees, can exacerbate respiratory infections in vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with chronic conditions like COPD or cardiovascular disease.
In the Lombardy region, monitoring reports have already indicated an increase in acute respiratory infections, with an estimated 25,164 cases recorded in a single week. While current circulation levels are classified as basal, there has been a notable rise in emergency room visits for flu-like syndromes.
In Sicily, Professor Antonio Cascio clarified that while symptoms like coughs and sore throats are currently appearing, the true influenza season typically peaks between late November and January. He noted that while cold temperatures do not directly cause influenza, the weather leads to more time spent in enclosed spaces, which increases the risk of contagion. Medical professionals further recommend being mindful of increased contagion risks in enclosed environments as people return to schools and offices.
