Italy advances personalized oncology and leukemia immunotherapy

Medical advancements in Italy are focusing on personalized care and improved immunotherapy for cancer and blood diseases. The Fondazione per la medicina personalizzata (Fmp) has launched ‘Prisma’, a research program designed to identify a ‘personal code’ for cancer patients. This initiative aims to tailor psychological, nutritional, and rehabilitative support to how individual patients experience their illness, moving beyond purely biological treatment profiles.

In the field of hematology, the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) has approved the reimbursement of blinatumomab as a first-line treatment for adult patients with newly diagnosed Philadelphia-negative B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Developed by Amgen, this immunotherapy can be used alongside or instead of chemotherapy, potentially reducing toxicity and increasing three-year survival rates to over 80%.

Additionally, there is an increasing emphasis on patient quality of life and digital monitoring. For patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), new digital tools like the ‘Vita Lmc Tracker’ allow for real-time symptom reporting, helping to bridge the information gap between patients and clinicians.
