Aigio double homicide investigation continues as new DNA evidence emerges

Greek police are probing the June 9, 2026 murders of 54‑year‑old Maria Papadopoulou and her 26‑year‑old son, Olympios, in a home in Aigio. The 65‑year‑old Italian partner of the victim, who has been held in Korydallos prison, insists he is innocent, claiming he was in the bathroom washing clothes and that the mother and son killed each other. Authorities have treated him as the main suspect from the outset.

Forensic examinations have so far found no blood on the suspect’s underwear or towel, and a bottle of cleaning fluid was recovered from the bathroom floor. Three bathroom towels were sent for analysis. DNA testing of the knife and pistol revealed only the victims’ DNA, while no Italian DNA was detected on the victims’ fingernails. Investigators reported the presence of DNA from an unidentified third person on the weapon and on other objects, prompting further specialised laboratory work.

Additional statements have been recorded from two witnesses who said the suspect had attended online sessions with a psychologist concerning his partner’s alcohol issues. Police continue to evaluate new testimonies and forensic results as they seek to determine the perpetrator of the high‑profile killings that shocked the local community.
