Aigio double homicide – investigation and bail request
Entities: Olympio · Aigio · Maria (54-year-old partner) · 65‑year‑old Italian suspect · Aigio, Greece
Overview
Greek police continue to examine the 9 June 2026 double homicide in Loggos, Aigio, where 54‑year‑old Maria Papadopoulou and her 26‑year‑old son Olympios were found with multiple stab wounds and a .22‑calibre gunshot injury to the son. A forensic report dated 7 July confirmed DNA from only the victims and an unidentified third person on the pistol, with no trace of the 65‑year‑old Italian partner, Marco, on the weapons or his clothing.
Phone‑call records show Maria telling her son, “They told me to harm you,” and investigators now seriously consider that Maria killed Olympios and then took her own life. A psychiatric assessment from May 2026 documented depressive symptoms, alcohol dependence and a recommendation for treatment that Maria declined.
On 10 July, authorities reiterated the scenario that the mother may have fatally wounded her son before committing suicide, noting the same psychiatric background. The same report mentioned an unrelated teen killing on Crete, which is not linked to this case.
On 26 July, Marco publicly maintained his innocence, stating that “Maria, being in a bad psychological state, shot Olympios and then ended her own life.” His defence team announced plans to file a bail request, claiming new evidence could overturn the prevailing narrative. Marco’s brother also denied any weapon use by his sibling and expressed grief for the victims.
Prosecutors continue to seek the unknown DNA donor and review procedural issues. The case remains open under Greek jurisdiction.
