Aigion double homicide probe eyes mother as possible killer

In the early hours of 9 June, police in Aigion (Loggo district) discovered the bodies of 54‑year‑old Maria and her 26‑year‑old son Olympios. The couple’s 65‑year‑old Italian partner was arrested and detained on suspicion of a double murder.

New forensic observations have prompted investigators to reassess the case. Photographs of the autopsy no longer show the previously reported back wound on the mother, and the wrist injuries are now interpreted as self‑inflicted “test” cuts. DNA analysis of the firearm used on the son revealed genetic material from the mother, the son and an unknown third person, but none from the Italian suspect. Toxicology showed traces of tranquilizers and cannabis in the Italian’s system, and no blood or DNA was found on his clothing.

Authorities are re‑examining the original autopsy report and other evidence, and they are now seriously considering the scenario that the mother killed her son and then committed suicide. The final forensic report is still pending, and the investigation remains ongoing.
