Air India AI-171 crash families press for black box data and fair investigation

On June 12, 2025 a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner operating as Air India flight AI‑171 crashed shortly after take‑off from Ahmedabad, killing 260 people on board and on the ground. Nearly a year later, families of the victims gathered in Ahmedabad and demanded that the raw flight‑data recorder (FDR) and cockpit‑voice recorder (CVR) data be released to them. They called for a transparent and “fair” investigation report that does not place sole blame on the pilots and urged the UK Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau to take a more active role alongside India’s AAIB.

The families have already received compensation from Tata Sons and Air India, but stress that compensation does not replace the need for answers. They also plan a religious ceremony on the first anniversary of the crash, pending official permission, and have raised concerns about possible technical or maintenance issues, including reports of water leakage and electrical faults prior to the flight.
