Air India AI-171 crash investigation draft due Oct 2026

Overview

India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has moved the probe of the June 12 2025 AI‑171 Boeing 787 crash into its analysis phase after completing a cockpit‑voice‑recorder transcript and a psychological autopsy. The bureau expects to finish the remaining work within about six weeks and to circulate a draft final report to participating countries by October 2026. The draft will then be opened for comment before a full report is issued.

The AAIB has resisted petitions before the Supreme Court seeking a parallel inquiry and public release of the cockpit recordings, citing statutory confidentiality rules meant to protect investigative candour. Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu reiterated that the priority is establishing the factual cause, not speed of publication, while families of the 260 victims continue to demand full transparency.

International partners – the US NTSB, the UK’s AAIB, Boeing and GE – remain involved under ICAO and Chicago Convention frameworks. Earlier delays were attributed to missing engine‑telemetry data that required specialised testing in the United States, and pilots’ unions have disputed theories of pilot‑initiated shutdown, pointing to possible electrical or software faults.

Compensation cells have issued interim ex‑gratia payments, but many relatives await the pending AAIB findings. The investigation aims to prevent future accidents rather than assign blame, keeping the case central to aviation‑safety reforms and compensation debates in India.
