Air India Boeing 787 Crash Probe Shows Significant Progress, Final Report Pending
One year after Air India Flight AI‑171, a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after take‑off from Ahmedabad on 12 June 2025, killing 260 people (241 onboard and 19 on the ground), the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) says the investigation has made “significant progress”. The AAIB’s interim statement notes that the team has completed extensive analysis of aircraft systems, flight‑recorder data, engine components, maintenance and operational records, and is now integrating the evidence. The preliminary report had identified simultaneous movement of the engine fuel‑control switches from “RUN” to “CUTOFF”, cutting fuel to both engines, but the cause of that action remains unknown. Further engine testing, including analysis of the engine‑management unit in the United States, is still underway, delaying the final report. The AAIB stresses that the probe’s purpose is to improve aviation safety, not to assign blame, and urges the public to avoid speculation. Families of victims continue to seek answers, while the pilots’ union has opposed an interim report. The final report will be issued after all investigative activities and international review are completed, as required by ICAO Annex 13.
