Air India crash investigation still pending a year after Ahmedabad disaster
On 12 June 2025 a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner operating Air India Flight AI‑171 crashed seconds after take‑off from Ahmedabad, India, on its way to London Gatwick. The accident killed 241 of the 242 people on board and 19 people on the ground, leaving one survivor and a total death toll of 260.
A year later, India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has not released a final report. The agency says the investigation is ongoing, with analysis of aircraft systems, flight‑data recorders, engine components and maintenance records still underway. A preliminary report identified that both engine fuel‑control switches moved from “RUN” to “CUTOFF” shortly after take‑off, cutting fuel to the engines, and recorded a cockpit exchange in which one pilot asked the other why the fuel was cut off. The cause of the switch movement—pilot action, mechanical failure or other factors—remains undetermined.
Families of victims continue to seek answers while receiving interim compensation totalling around Rs 300 crore. Air India observed a two‑minute silence and Boeing issued condolences, reaffirming cooperation with the AAIB. Pilot unions and the Federation of Indian Pilots have called for a transparent, possibly judicial, inquiry.
