Air Passenger Traffic: Mexico Declines, Europe Rebounds in May

In June, Mexico’s three major airport groups—ASUR, GAP and OMA—recorded a 4.2% year‑on‑year drop in total passenger traffic, marking the fifth consecutive month of decline. The fall was driven by a 0.6% decrease in domestic travel and a 6.5% drop in international traffic, with ASUR and GAP each down about 5.5% while OMA posted a modest 2.1% gain.

Conversely, European airports saw a 3.2% year‑on‑year increase in passenger numbers in May, according to ACI Europe. Spanish airports led the growth, with Barcelona up 6.5%, Palma de Mallorca up 4.9% and Madrid up 4.8%. Heathrow fell 1.2% but remained the busiest European hub, while Istanbul grew 2%. The EU‑EEA, Switzerland and the United Kingdom together posted a 3.4% rise, outpacing the rest of the world’s average 2% gain.
