Mexico 2026 economic trends – September Update
Overview
Following the downward pressure seen in early September, the Mexican peso has regained strength, maintaining an exchange rate below the 17.00 per US dollar threshold. By September 4, the currency fluctuated between 16.88 and 16.95 pesos per dollar, marking some of its strongest levels since May 2024.
This appreciation is supported by positive domestic macroeconomic data, including a 5.9 percent year-on-year increase in gross fixed investment reported by INEGI. Additionally, a weakening US dollar, influenced by US labor market reports and anticipation of Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, has bolstered the peso. As of September 7, the exchange rate remained steady near 16.91 pesos per dollar, reflecting a weekly gain of approximately 0.56 percent.
By September 10, the USD/MXN exchange rate was recorded at 16.9407 pesos, a 0.30 percent increase from the previous close. Official Banxico references placed the FIX rate near 16.9202 pesos. While the dollar has seen a weekly gain of 0.11 percent, it has experienced a decline of approximately 8.91 percent over the past year.
During the second week of September, the peso experienced further fluctuations. On September 11, the currency showed appreciation, trading at approximately 16.93 units per dollar, despite a weekly depreciation of nearly 0.3 percent. Market volatility was driven by US consumer inflation data for August, which showed a monthly increase of 0.4 percent and an annual rate of 3.4 percent. These figures have reinforced market expectations regarding the Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest rate decisions scheduled for September 15 and 16. Throughout that week, the interbank exchange rate moved between 16.85 and 17.00 pesos per dollar.
