Air pollution triggers health alerts and exposure concerns in Spain

Air pollution levels in Spain have triggered health alerts and raised significant environmental concerns. In regions such as Valladolid, Puertollano, and parts of Catalonia, authorities have activated warning protocols due to ground-level ozone exceeding legal thresholds. In Valladolid, ozone levels remained above 100 µg/m³ for five consecutive days, prompting the implementation of preventive measures and recommendations to use public transport.

Ground-level ozone is formed by chemical reactions between nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds in the presence of intense sunlight and high temperatures. While generally not affecting the total population, health authorities advise high-risk groups to take precautions.

Broadly, Greenpeace reports that over 80% of the Spanish population is exposed to air pollution when measured against new, stricter European air quality limits. This upcoming regulatory shift, expected to be finalized by late 2026, aims to align Spanish legislation with World Health Organization standards. Traffic remains a primary contributor to these pollution levels, alongside industrial activities and port operations.
