Overview

A severe heatwave across the Iberian Peninsula has led to dangerous levels of tropospheric ozone pollution in several Spanish cities. Initially, Valladolid and Sevilla faced critical alerts. In Valladolid, authorities activated ‘Situation 2, Warning’ after ozone concentrations reached 189 micrograms per cubic meter, prompting traffic restrictions and speed limits. As the heatwave persisted, the situation expanded to include Madrid. In Valladolid, the City Council maintained a ‘Situation 1, Preventive’ status following nine consecutive days of elevated ozone values. Meanwhile, in Madrid, environmentalists criticized the institutional response as monitoring stations like Casa de Campo exceeded the ‘Health Protection Threshold’ for multiple days, surpassing European regulatory limits.

The pollution crisis extended into Catalonia in early September. The Department of Ecological Transition of the Generalitat de Catalunya issued an alert for the Camp de Tarragona region after the Alcover monitoring station recorded a maximum concentration of 183 µg/m3. The Agència de Salut Pública de Catalunya advised vulnerable populations, including infants and pregnant women, to reduce intense outdoor physical activity.

By early September, ozone levels in Valladolid remained above 100 µg/m3 for five consecutive days, prompting recommendations to use public transport. In Puertollano and parts of Catalonia, authorities also activated warning protocols. Greenpeace has reported that over 80% of the Spanish population is exposed to air pollution when measured against stricter European air quality limits expected to be finalized by late 2026.
