Airbnb introduces weather-related insurance for travelers
Airbnb has launched a new insurance service designed to compensate travelers for poor weather during their trips. The service allows users to receive between 50 and 1,000 euros per day, depending on the specific policy terms and the user's country of residence.
Currently available to residents of ten European countries, the insurance can be selected during the accommodation booking process. To qualify for compensation, a location must record at least 1.5 millimeters of rain within a single hour between 8:00 and 20:00, for a minimum number of hours defined by the individual policy.
Claims are processed automatically using independent meteorological data from organizations including NASA, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Travelers do not need to provide photographic evidence or manual proof of weather conditions; instead, they receive notifications via Airbnb or email with instructions for receiving funds through the insurer, Chubb.
