Airbus and Boeing Launch Joint Ventures for Hydrogen‑Powered and Ultra‑Silent Aircraft

Airbus announced a joint venture with Germany’s MTU Aero Engines to develop a hydrogen‑fuel‑cell propulsion system that will power a passenger aircraft. The partnership, part of Airbus’s ZEROe program, aims to have a prototype ready by 2027, with commercial service projected beyond 2035, marking the company’s first foray into building its own engines.

Boeing, together with Lufthansa and engine maker Rolls‑Royce, will conduct flight tests this summer on a 787 Dreamliner demonstrator in Glasgow. The trials will evaluate a new, shorter air‑intake design and algorithm‑generated “smart” flight routes intended to cut fuel use and airport‑area noise, advancing ultra‑silent aircraft concepts.
