Airbus‑MTU hydrogen fuel‑cell JV and hybrid‑electric work

Overview

Since formalising the €1.2 billion joint venture on 7 July 2026, Airbus and MTU Aero Engines have continued to demonstrate technical progress. MTU’s Flying Fuel Cell (FFC) programme has completed liquid‑hydrogen fuel‑system and air‑supply tests and is now assembling its first integrated 350‑kW fuel‑cell stack and a full‑system demonstrator at its Munich site, emulating flight‑like conditions ahead of later‑2026 integration work.

Airbus is simultaneously advancing the LEIA (Large‑Scale Integration Demonstrator of Hybrid Electrical Architecture) project, financed by the European Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking. The consortium now includes AVL, Collins Aerospace, Liebherr Aerospace, Safran, SAFT, Fraunhofer‑Gesellschaft, Lynxeo, NLR, the University of Warwick and the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. The effort aims to deliver a high‑voltage power‑distribution system for non‑propulsion loads, with a full‑scale ground demonstration slated for 2027. This architecture is intended to complement the fuel‑cell work and pave the way for higher electrification levels in short‑ and medium‑range jets.

In parallel, Airbus has deepened its partnership with Collins Aerospace under the EU Clean Aviation programme. Collins completed integrated laboratory testing of megawatt‑class motor‑generators and controllers at its Grid facility in Rockford, USA, as part of the SWITCH project. Those subsystems are now moving to Airbus’s STEP laboratory in Ottobrunn for aircraft‑level integration, including battery interfacing and energy‑management testing, with a ground demonstration targeted for 2027. Within LEIA, Collins will act as technical lead for energy‑source hardware, supplying scalable motor‑generator units, electronic controllers and power‑distribution equipment across test sites in Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Both initiatives are coordinated within Europe’s HEROPS clean‑aviation research programme, alongside Safran’s PHILEAS hybrid‑electric engine tests. The joint venture remains on track to certify a fully electric hydrogen fuel‑cell propulsion system for operational start‑up in 2027, with commercial service envisaged beyond 2035.
