Airbus identifies quality issue in 500 A321neo aircraft

Airbus has identified a quality issue affecting approximately 500 A321neo aircraft. The defect involves structural aluminum stringers used to reinforce the forward fuselage. These components, designed by Airbus and manufactured by sub-supplier Stelia, were found to have a non-compliant special coating treatment that could potentially lead to corrosion.

The manufacturer has classified the issue as a quality deviation rather than a safety risk, noting that the discrepancy was discovered during routine surface protection inspections in maintenance hangars rather than during flight operations. Consequently, the affected aircraft will remain in service.

Corrective actions are being implemented during scheduled maintenance stops without requiring the disassembly of the aircraft. Airbus stated that the cause has been identified and that new components are being manufactured according to the correct specifications. While no Airworthiness Directive (AD) has been issued yet, the company is working with regulators to determine which specific aircraft require inspection and the timeline for implementation.
