Airbus aircraft manufacturing quality issues

Overview

Airbus has encountered separate quality control issues affecting different aircraft models. Initially, deliveries of the A330neo were nearly halted for several months due to a tool being left inside an aircraft’s horizontal tail plane. This necessitated additional inspections, resulting in zero deliveries for the model during June and July. Airbus reported that the root cause was identified and deliveries resumed in August.

Subsequently, a new quality issue was identified regarding the A321neo involving insufficient anti-corrosion protection on the surface coating of structural aluminum stringers in the lower front section of the fuselage. These components, designed by Airbus and manufactured by sub-supplier Stelia, were found to have a non-compliant special coating treatment. The issue is estimated to affect approximately 500 aircraft, including 250 units in service and 250 currently in production across Europe, the United States, and China.

Airbus has classified the defect as a quality deviation rather than a safety risk, noting that the discrepancy was discovered during routine surface protection inspections in maintenance hangars. Corrective actions are being implemented during scheduled maintenance stops without requiring the disassembly of the stringers. While no Airworthiness Directive has been issued yet, the company is working with regulators to determine inspection timelines.

Despite these issues and existing engine and supply chain bottlenecks, Airbus commercial aircraft division head Lars Wagner expressed confidence in meeting the 2026 delivery target of approximately 870 aircraft. The company noted that a solution for the A321neo issue has been defined and new components are being manufactured to correct specifications.
