Airports achieve new milestones in carbon accreditation

Jersey Airport has achieved Level 4 ‘Transformation’ status under the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme. This accreditation places the airport among 96 European facilities that have moved beyond emission management to setting long-term targets and collaborating with partners to reduce wider environmental impacts.

To reach this milestone, Ports of Jersey implemented several operational changes, including transitioning vehicles, equipment, and terminal heating to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and utilizing renewable BioLPG for its fire training ground. Other measures include energy-efficiency upgrades like LED lighting and smart metering, as well as the introduction of Continuous Climb and Continuous Descent procedures for aircraft. The airport has also established a Private and Business Aviation Decarbonisation Charge to fund future carbon-reduction projects, aiming for net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030.

Separately, the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority (RDUAA) has reached Level 1 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation initiative. This foundational step allows the authority to identify, measure, and manage its carbon footprint, including emissions from vehicles, emergency generators, and electricity. The authority intends to use this data to inform long-term sustainability planning and progress toward Level 2 accreditation.
