AITAT investigates fatal train collision in Urda, Spain

The Independent Administrative Authority for the Technical Investigation of Accidents and Incidents in Railways, Maritime, and Civil Aviation (AITAT) has opened a formal investigation into a serious high-speed rail collision in Urda, Toledo.

The accident occurred at 8:53 AM on the Madrid–Sevilla high-speed line when a Renfe AVE train (number 2080) struck a stationary Iryo train (number 6076) from behind. Preliminary reports from AITAT indicate a death toll of up to 74 people, though local and central government authorities have not yet officially confirmed these specific figures. One report noted at least 69 fatalities and over 200 injuries.

Investigators stated that all hypotheses regarding the cause of the collision remain open. As the investigation is in its initial stages, officials have not yet interviewed the drivers or circulation managers, as they are not currently in a condition to undergo interviews. The exact speed of the Renfe train at the time of impact is being determined through the extraction of data from the onboard recorders.
