High-speed train collision in Toledo, Spain

Overview

A major high-speed rail accident occurred near the Urda station in the province of Toledo, Spain, involving a Renfe AVE train and a private Iryo train on the Madrid-Andalusia line. Preliminary reports indicate the Renfe train struck the Iryo unit from behind at approximately 160 to 200 km/h, causing at least two carriages to derail and fall down an embankment. The death toll has been reported at 74, according to the Railway Accident Investigation Commission and the Independent Administrative Authority for the Technical Investigation of Railway, Maritime, and Civil Aviation Accidents (Aitat). Among the victims is former Spanish Minister of Employment and Social Security, Fátima Báñez. Other confirmed fatalities include two Argentine nationals: 51-year-old Agustín Randazzo and 32-year-old podiatrist Ana Martina Conte Grand. Victims also include foreign nationals from China, Japan, the Philippines, and Italy. More than 200 people have been injured in the crash, with at least 110 hospitalized. The collision involved a total of 544 passengers, including one infant. Investigations are focusing on defects in the LZB signaling and safety system. Transport Minister Óscar Puente stated that a technical failure in the LZB signaling system preceded the crash, and preliminary findings suggest the Atocha control center may have erroneously authorized the Renfe train to proceed despite a red signal. AITAT has opened a grave category investigation, noting that the LZB failure occurred at 8:31 am, forcing trains to use alternative signaling procedures. Reports indicate a safety system upgrade for the line, awarded to Thales in 2021, had not been completed by its original deadline. High-speed rail services between Madrid and Andalusia remain suspended. Following the collision, Spanish investigators seized black boxes from both the Renfe and Iryo trains to analyze operational data.
