AIUDF alleges BJP vote manipulation in Nagaon bypoll
The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) manipulated votes during the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll to secure a victory for candidate Devasish Sharma. During a thanksgiving rally in Samaguri, AIUDF leader Aminul Islam claimed that BJP workers and independent agents engaged in fraudulent voting practices.
Islam alleged that between 100,000 and 200,000 votes were fraudulently cast in the names of Muslim voters employed outside of Assam. He further claimed that irregularities included the deployment of 16 to 20 agents at single polling stations. The AIUDF maintains that Badruddin Ajmal was the actual choice of the voters.
In the October 6 election, Devasish Sharma won with 714,349 votes, defeating Badruddin Ajmal, who received 572,125 votes, by a margin of 142,224. The Congress candidate, Sibamoni Bora, finished third. While reports of electronic voting machine malfunctions and Model Code of Conduct violations emerged during polling, the allegations of large-scale manipulation have not been independently verified.
