Devashish Sharma wins Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election

Overview

On October 6, voting concluded for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat, which became vacant following the resignation of Pradyut Bordoloi. The election featured 15 candidates, primarily contested by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian National Congress, and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

The final estimated voter turnout reached approximately 76 per cent among the 1.9 million registered electors. While polling was largely reported as peaceful, opposition leaders raised allegations of irregularities, including “booth capturing, intimidation of opposition workers, and administrative bias,” which were not independently verified.

On October 10, the results confirmed a decisive victory for the BJP candidate, former IAS officer Devashish Sharma. Sharma secured 714,349 votes, defeating AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, who received 572,125 votes, by a margin of 142,224. The Congress nominee, Sibamoni Bora, finished in third place. Sharma attributed his success to constituent engagement and the guidance of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, suggesting that Ajmal’s campaign relied on communal appeals. Chief Minister Sarma described the mandate as a “triumph of development over polarization.”

Following the results, the AIUDF leveled more specific allegations of electoral fraud. During a rally in Samaguri, AIUDF leader Aminul Islam claimed that between 100,000 and 200,000 votes were fraudulently cast in the names of Muslim voters working outside of Assam. Islam also alleged that irregularities included the deployment of 16 to 20 agents at single polling stations. These claims of large-scale manipulation have not been independently verified.
