Akari Honda sentenced for dangerous driving causing injury

Akari Honda, a silver medalist in swimming from the Tokyo Olympics, has been sentenced to one year of imprisonment, suspended for three years, by the Tokyo District Court Tachikawa Branch.

The verdict follows charges of dangerous driving causing injury. In November 2025, Honda drove at speeds between 88 and 108 km/h on a road in Tama, Tokyo, where the speed limit was 30 km/h. The vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane, resulting in an accident that caused injuries to another driver requiring approximately one month of recovery.

During the trial, Honda admitted to the charges. Prosecutors had previously sought a one-year prison sentence, noting that the speed was increased because the defendant did not want to lose distance from a sports car driving ahead.
