AKEL launches campaign for retiree rights in Cyprus
AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou has launched a nationwide campaign in Cyprus to advocate for the rights and welfare of the country's 180,000 citizens over the age of 65. Speaking at a party symposium in Nicosia, Stefanou addressed the government and President Nicos Christodoulides, demanding tangible support for retirees rather than mere promises.
The political party stated that certain aspects of pension reform are non-negotiable, specifically rejecting increases in social insurance contributions, higher retirement ages, or the reduction of benefits for future retirees. Stefanou emphasized the necessity of ensuring a dignified and sufficient income for all elderly citizens.
Stefanou highlighted critical economic concerns, noting that one in three elderly people in Cyprus is at risk of poverty—a rate double the European Union average. Additionally, he reported that one in five citizens over 65 faces energy poverty, describing these statistics as shameful for a nation experiencing economic growth.
