AKEL rejects NATO-backed solution for Cyprus dispute

AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanu said the party will not support any solution that involves NATO, arguing that it would cement Turkey’s role as a guarantor of the island. He reiterated that the only path to a settlement is preserving the gains already achieved in the negotiations, including agreements on property, security and guarantees.

Stefanu welcomed United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres’s upcoming visit to Cyprus as a sign of commitment to resolving the dispute, but warned that new ideas from foreign diplomats or Turkish‑Cypriot and Greek‑Cypriot politicians could undermine the already‑reached compromises. The party insists on a bi‑communal, bi‑zonal federation without foreign troops, emphasizing the need to maintain existing agreements and to continue the push for reunification.
