Overview
Following commemorations of the island’s 52nd anniversary, UN Secretary‑General António Guterres began a three‑day mission to Cyprus (27‑29 July 2026), the first by a Secretary‑General in 16 years. Accompanied by personal envoy María Ángela Holguín and senior officials, Guterres met Greek‑Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish‑Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, laid a wreath at the UN monument in the Ledra Palace buffer zone and visited the Missing Persons Committee. The agenda retained the “constructive uncertainty” framework and the prospect of an expanded “5+1” conference bringing both communities and international partners together. Parallel mass mobilisations on both sides of the Green Line called for a bi‑communal, bi‑zonal federation; AKEL’s Stefanos Stefánou urged the Greek‑Cypriot side to articulate clear positions.
At the same time, Cyprus Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Michalis Damianos warned that Turkey’s refusal to compromise remains the main obstacle to reunification, reaffirming the Republic’s commitment to a solution based on UN resolutions, EU principles and international law. He highlighted the recent appointment of an EU Special Representative for Cyprus and the UN Secretary‑General’s support, underscoring the heightened diplomatic pressure on Ankara.
