Akhil Gogoi begins indefinite Satyagraha over Assam flood relief

Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi has launched an indefinite Satyagraha at the Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati to protest delays in flood relief payments. The protest follows a devastating disaster on July 19 that affected several districts in Upper Assam.

Gogoi alleges that between 30 and 40 per cent of affected families in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat have yet to receive the promised 15,000 rupee interim assistance. He further claims that families in the hardest-hit areas of Sivasagar and Charaideo have not received an additional 10,000 rupee special relief package. His demands include the immediate disbursement of these funds and 10 lakh rupees in compensation for families facing major losses.

In response, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the government is conducting surveys and has already identified approximately 55,000 families for assistance. He accused Gogoi of attempting to claim political credit for the relief measures.

During related demonstrations in Guwahati, police detained several Raijor Dal leaders, including Gyanashree Bora and Rasel Hussain, after protesters gathered outside the state secretariat.
