Assam flood relief compensation protests
Overview
Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi launched an indefinite Satyagraha protest at the Assam Legislative Assembly in early October to protest delays in flood relief payments. Gogoi alleged that between 30 and 40 per cent of affected families in districts including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat had not received promised interim assistance or special relief packages following a July disaster.
While Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated the government was conducting surveys and had identified approximately 55,000 families for assistance, the protest led to the detention of several Raijor Dal leaders during demonstrations in Guwahati.
After 14 days, Gogoi ended the protest following assurances from the Chief Minister. The government reportedly promised to release pending compensation and share updated beneficiary lists, including Rs 4.60 crore approved for approximately 7,000 families in the Sivasagar constituency. Gogoi accepted the proposal to form an expert committee to investigate the floods, though he had originally demanded a CBI inquiry.
