Akhil Gogoi ends flood relief protest after talks with Assam ministers

Akhil Gogoi, leader of the Raijor Dal and MLA for Sivasagar, has called off his 14-day indefinite satyagraha protest in Dispur. The agitation, which began on October 2, sought compensation and inquiries regarding flood damage in Assam.

Gogoi decided to end the protest following assurances from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The Chief Minister reportedly promised to release pending compensation to flood-hit families and share updated beneficiary lists. In the Sivasagar constituency, approximately 7,000 families are expected to benefit, with Rs 4.60 crore approved for newly identified recipients.

While Gogoi accepted the government's proposal to form an expert committee to investigate the circumstances of the floods, he noted this was an alternative to his original demand for a CBI inquiry. He also expressed uncertainty regarding the government's response to demands for an additional Rs 10,000 in assistance per family.
