Akira anime 4K/IMAX theatrical re‑release slated for Sep 4 2026
Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will bring the 1988 cyber‑punk anime AKIRA back to theaters in the United States and Canada on September 4 2026. The film will be shown in 4K resolution and IMAX formats, offered in a Japanese version with English subtitles as well as an English‑dub track.
The restoration, which first premiered in Japan in May 2020, revisits Katsuhiro Otomo’s landmark work that originated from his 1982 manga and earned more than $80 million in home‑video sales. The re‑release follows the cancellation of Warner Bros.’ live‑action adaptation, which had been attached to director Taika Waititi until the rights reverted to Kodansha in 2025.
