Akira re-release earns $3.1 million in US and Canada

The classic 1988 anime film ‘Akira’, directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, has achieved significant box office success during its 4K and IMAX re-release in the United States and Canada. The re-release, distributed by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment, earned approximately $3.1 million during its opening period. This total includes $2.6 million collected from Friday through Sunday, plus an estimated $535,000 from the Labor Day period.

In addition to the North American performance, the remastered film is scheduled for special screenings in selected Cinépolis theaters starting September 10. The film, a landmark of the cyberpunk genre, follows the story of Shotaro Kaneda and the psychic awakening of his friend Tetsuo Shima in a post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo.
