Akira 35mm Print Tour Launches Across UK and Ireland

A brand‑new 35mm print of Katsuhiro Ōtomo’s 1988 cyber‑punk classic ‘Akira’—struck from a 4K master and the first new print of the film in decades—will debut at the BFI Southbank in London from 14 to 19 August. After the opening run, the print will tour selected cinemas throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland for the remainder of the year, screened in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with a stereo Japanese‑language soundtrack and English subtitles.

The print was produced in partnership with The Cinema Printing Company (CPC London) and ORWO Studios. Technical manager Robbie Duncan of Anime Limited said, “There’s something special about film going through a projector and there’s something special about ‘Akira.’ I can’t thank our partners enough for their expertise and going the extra mile to make ‘Akira’ look as good as it can.” Anime Limited’s UK & Ireland general manager Kerry Kasim added, “The success of our recent theatrical re‑release has proven our capability to revitalize one of the most influential and iconic films in animation. We’re thrilled to present this fantastic way to watch ‘Akira’ in cinemas.”

The tour follows a record‑breaking re‑release earlier this year that earned more than £1 million at the UK and Ireland box office, setting a new high‑water mark for classic anime releases in the region.
