Akira anime returns to theaters in 4K and IMAX

The classic 1988 cyberpunk anime film ‘Akira’, directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, is returning to theaters in a remastered 4K format.

In Brazil, the film is scheduled for release on August 27, including screenings in regions such as Roraima. In North America, Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will bring the film to theaters in the United States and Canada on September 4, with screenings available in both 4K and IMAX. These North American releases will offer the original Japanese audio with English subtitles as well as an English dub.

Originally based on Otomo’s manga, the story is set in Neo-Tokyo following a devastating nuclear explosion. The plot follows a young biker named Kaneda as he attempts to save his friend Tetsuo, who has developed dangerous psychic abilities following secret military experiments. The film is widely regarded as a landmark work that significantly influenced the global science fiction and animation genres.
