Akira returns to theaters with 4K remastered re-release

The influential 1988 cyberpunk anime film ‘Akira’, directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, is receiving a 4K remastered theatrical re-release. The film has been rescanned from its original 35mm print to provide a high-definition digital format.

In Mexico, Cinépolis will host the exclusive re-release starting September 10 at selected complexes. In the United States, screenings are scheduled to begin the week following September 4 at various locations, including AMC theaters and cinemas in Pooler, with some venues offering an IMAX experience.

Originally released in Japan with a significant production budget, ‘Akira’ is recognized for its detailed animation and its role in expanding the popularity of anime in Western markets. The story is set in the fictional Neo-Tokyo and follows a teenage biker gang caught in a national conspiracy.
