Akis Skertsos rejects claims of Greek wage decline to Bulgarian levels

Greek Minister of State Akis Skertsos has rejected opposition claims that Greek wages have fallen to levels comparable to Bulgaria, citing Eurostat data to argue that the comparison is based on incorrect indicators.

Skertsos clarified that while GDP per capita in purchasing power parity (PPS) shows Greece and Bulgaria at 68% of the EU average for 2025, this metric measures productivity rather than actual income. Instead, he pointed to Real Individual Consumption (AIC), where Greece reaches 80% of the EU average, and the minimum wage adjusted for PPS.

According to the Minister, the Greek minimum wage has approximately 24% higher purchasing power than the Bulgarian minimum wage. In nominal terms, the Greek minimum wage is approximately €1,073 per month, compared to roughly €620 in Bulgaria. Skertsos also noted that Greece ranks 17th in the EU for net average salaries, placing it above countries such as Portugal and the Czech Republic.
