Akpınar calls for safety mapping of risky areas in Northern Cyprus

Akpınar has called for the creation of a ‘Dark Spots and Risky Areas Map’ across Northern Cyprus, starting with Kyrenia, to address growing concerns regarding uncontrolled public spaces.

According to Akpınar, abandoned buildings, unfinished construction sites, and remote mountainous or forested areas are increasingly becoming hubs for illegal activities. These locations pose risks including drug and alcohol use, abuse, prostitution, and organized crime, in addition to environmental pollution.

To mitigate these risks, Akpınar proposed implementing preventive measures such as improved lighting, surveillance cameras, physical barriers, and access controls. The proposal emphasizes a coordinated effort between the General Directorate of Police, municipalities, district governorships, and the Department of Environmental Protection. Furthermore, Akpınar suggested establishing a citizen tip line and systematically recording abandoned structures to transform these safety concerns into a continuous public security policy.
