Public safety and security proposals in Northern Cyprus

Serhat Akpınar, a Member of Parliament for Girne, has proposed various security and safety initiatives in Northern Cyprus to address different types of public risk.

Initially, Akpınar called for the creation of a ‘Dark Spots and Risky Areas Map’ to identify uncontrolled public spaces such as abandoned buildings, unfinished construction sites, and remote forested areas. He noted these locations are increasingly used for illegal activities, including organized crime, drug use, and prostitution. His proposal included preventive measures like improved lighting, surveillance, and physical barriers through coordinated efforts between police, municipalities, and environmental departments.

Following a maritime incident on the Girne-Taşucu line, Akpınar expanded his focus to advocate for a permanent maritime security policy. He proposed establishing a ‘Northern Cyprus Marine Research and Security Center’ to manage emergencies such as fires, medical crises, irregular migration, and environmental disasters. His recommendations include the use of specialized equipment like sea ambulances and unmanned vehicles, the development of bathymetric maps, and a ‘Blue Homeland and Marine Life Strategy’ to integrate environmental protection with maritime tourism and fishing.
