AKPS reports near-daily drug smuggling attempts at KLIA
The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) reports that drug smuggling attempts, including the export of cannabis flowers, are occurring almost daily at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2.
AKPS Director-General Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain stated that following a recent incident involving a Malaysian pilot in Indonesia, the agency was tasked with coordinating screenings alongside Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB). The agency’s primary responsibilities at international airports include coordinating targeted screenings, intelligence coordination, and managing K9 units.
According to official data, the value of seizures and prevented revenue leakages has increased nearly threefold to over RM265 million this year, compared to RM80 million recorded last year. Major seizures involve drugs and electronic waste (e-waste). Mohd Shuhaily noted that many of those intercepted are foreign nationals rather than Malaysian citizens.
