Aksaray Mosque in Elazığ awaits restoration after six years

The 300-year-old Aksaray Mosque in Elazığ has remained closed for worship for six years following heavy damage sustained during the January 24, 2020, earthquake. Despite the structure being designated as a historical site that cannot be demolished due to its architectural features, it has fallen into a state of ruin due to neglect.

Local neighborhood head Özcan Bal noted that while the government has successfully constructed hundreds of thousands of new housing units, the restoration of this mosque has stalled. The situation was further exacerbated by the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes and a fire that damaged the mosque's wooden components. Although tenders have been issued and funds allocated, the restoration work has yet to be completed.
