Turkish earthquake-damaged mosque restorations

Overview

Efforts to restore historical mosques damaged by earthquakes in Turkey show varying levels of progress across different regions.

In Kilis, the restoration of the 400-year-old Akcurun Mosque is nearing completion. Coordinated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the General Directorate of Foundations, the project involved reinforcing the minaret, roof, and walls with steel tension rods and injection applications to protect against future seismic activity. Officials noted that 12 of 22 heavily damaged foundation cultural assets in Kilis have now been restored.

Conversely, the 300-year-old Aksaray Mosque in Elazığ remains closed and in a state of ruin. Despite being designated a historical site, the mosque has been neglected for six years following a 2020 earthquake. Its condition was further worsened by the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes and a fire. While funds have been allocated and tenders issued, local residents report that restoration work has stalled.
