The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has transferred regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Akwa Ibom State to the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission (AKSERC). This move follows the Electricity Act 2023 and constitutional reforms aimed at decentralizing the nation's power sector.

Under the transition, Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Plc (PHEDC) is required to incorporate a new subsidiary, PHEDC SubCo, to manage electricity supply and distribution within the state. NERC has directed that all transfers, including assets, liabilities, and contracts, must be completed by February 17, 2027.

AKSERC Chairman Arit Uya clarified that the transition will not result in immediate changes to electricity supply, billing, or tariffs. PHEDC will continue to serve as the electricity provider during this period, and existing customer accounts and meters remain valid. While AKSERC will eventually assume responsibility for end-user tariffs and consumer protection, NERC will maintain oversight of interstate and international electricity operations.
