Al Hoceima police officer killed during arrest of high-profile suspect
A security operation in the Imzouren area of Al Hoceima, Morocco, resulted in the death of police officer Hamza Al-Zaim during an armed confrontation on September 7, 2026. The operation targeted a 25-year-old suspect wanted on approximately 20 national warrants for serious crimes, including drug trafficking, organized crime, illegal migration, and attempted murder.
According to the General Prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Al Hoceima, the suspect resisted arrest by firing a shotgun at security forces. The exchange left Officer Al-Zaim dead and injured two Royal Gendarme members and a civilian. During the siege, members of the same criminal gang reportedly attempted to intervene using two vehicles and firearms to obstruct the arrest.
Security forces successfully apprehended the primary suspect, who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg during the encounter, and later detained two accomplices. Authorities also seized the shotgun used in the attack and a drone. In recognition of his sacrifice, the Directorate General of National Security announced an exceptional promotion for the late officer.
