Security violence in Al Hoceima, Morocco

Overview

In Al Hoceima, Morocco, a security operation in the Imzouren area resulted in the death of police officer Hamza Al-Zaim during an armed confrontation on September 7, 2026. The operation targeted a 25-year-old suspect wanted on approximately 20 national warrants for crimes including drug trafficking, organized crime, and attempted murder.

The General Prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Al Hoceima stated the suspect resisted arrest by firing a shotgun at security forces. The exchange killed Officer Al-Zaim and injured two Royal Gendarme members and a civilian. During the siege, members of the same criminal gang reportedly attempted to intervene with vehicles and firearms to obstruct the arrest.

Security forces apprehended the primary suspect, who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, and detained two accomplices. Authorities also seized the shotgun used in the attack and a drone. The Directorate General of National Security announced an exceptional promotion for the late officer.
