Al Jazeera cameraman Ahmed Washah killed in Israeli Gaza strike

Al Jazeera Mubasher photographer Ahmed Washah was killed when an Israeli airstrike hit a house in central Gaza, killing two other Palestinians as well. The strike occurred on 21 June 2026, days after a temporary cease‑fire had been in place. Ahmed, who had joined the network two months after his brother Mohammed Washah – also a journalist for Al Jazeera – was killed in an earlier Israeli strike on his car in April 2026.

Al Jazeera condemned the attack as a crime against journalists and called for immediate accountability, accusing Israel of trying to silence reporting from the ground. An Israeli army spokesman alleged that Washah was a Hamas sniper, but offered no evidence. The incident adds to a tally reported by Reporters Without Borders of more than 220 journalists killed in Gaza since the war began in October 2023, including at least 70 killed while on duty.

The network pledged to continue coverage of the conflict despite the targeting of its staff, and appealed to the international community and legal bodies to establish mechanisms to protect journalists in war zones.
