Al-Makha Port suffers heavy damage from Houthi attacks

Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan met with local authorities in Al-Makha and the Red Sea Ports Corporation to assess the human, material, and economic damage caused by recent Houthi attacks on the port and surrounding areas.

A report from the Red Sea Ports Corporation detailed the impact of attacks occurring in August, which included the use of ballistic missiles and drones. The strikes resulted in the deaths of 10 people and injuries to 17 workers, affecting approximately 2,800 employees. The attacks also caused the destruction of several civilian vessels, including the ‘Tehama’ and ‘Amir Khan’, as well as four wooden ships.

The damage has forced Al-Makha Port out of service, disrupting commercial, maritime, and fishing activities. This shutdown has significantly impacted local livelihoods and the regional economy. Governor Shamsan called on the government to implement an urgent program to rehabilitate the port, provide necessary equipment, and establish a mechanism to compensate merchants, ship owners, and other affected parties.
