Yemen unrest escalates after airport strikes and retaliation

Overview

Tribal mobilisations across Sanaa, Dhamar, Saada, Al‑Baidha, Marib, Hajah and other provinces continued through July as Houthi leader Abdul‑Malik al‑Houthi called for resistance to perceived U.S., Israeli and Saudi aggression and pledged support for Gaza and Iranian aid. The internationally‑recognised government and the Saudi‑led coalition expanded forces on the western coast and in southern Hodeidah, while fighting on the Jabal Dabbas front produced dozens of casualties. On 12 July tribes in Taiz announced a general mobilisation against the Saudi‑U.S. blockade and praised Iran’s role. The Houthis reported a Saudi‑led airstrike on Sana’a International Airport that day. The next day the recognised government bombed the airport runway to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing. In response the Iran‑backed Houthis launched ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi Arabia’s Abha International Airport and King Khalid Air Base; Saudi air‑defences intercepted several projectiles and civilian flights from Abha were temporarily suspended. On 13 July the recognised Yemeni government, backed by Saudi Arabia, again struck the Sana’a runway, claiming the action was necessary to stop an unauthorised Mahan Air flight carrying a Houthi delegation returning from Tehran. Yemen’s defence minister reiterated the use of “all available means” against such incursions, and the parliament denounced the strike as an infringement on national sovereignty. The Houthis immediately fired missiles and drones toward Abha and King Khalid, prompting a short‑term suspension of civil flights; Saudi‑led coalition forces intercepted the attacks and warned airlines to avoid Saudi airspace. Iran condemned the strike as a violation of Yemeni sovereignty and international law, while the UN special envoy expressed deep concern about the risk of wider escalation and urged de‑escalation to prevent a broader regional flare‑up affecting air traffic and Red Sea shipping.
